Built to Last: Weathering the Storms of Life on the Rock

We’ve all been through seasons when the winds howled and the rain poured. There is the unexpected diagnosis, heartbreak, disappointment, delays, or dreams that seem to have crumbled in front of us. If you’ve ever cried out to God and asked, “Why is this happening?” Know that you’re not alone. But Jesus reminds us in Matthew 7 that the same storm comes to both the wise and the foolish.

Let that settle in.

The storm comes to everyone.

Jesus tells the parable of two builders. There was one wise and one foolish builder. The wise man built his house on the rock. The foolish man built his on the sand. Both houses looked fine on the outside. But when the rain came, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against those houses there was only one that remained standing.

“The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.” Matthew 7:25 (NIV)

It wasn’t the absence of the storm that defined the wise builder but it was what he built his life on.

You can’t always predict the storm, but you can prepare for it by choosing the right foundation.

This past week, our family felt the storm. Plans didn’t go the way we hoped. Disappointment knocked hard. It felt like something was stolen right out from under us. But even in the swirl of emotions, one truth remained unshaken that we are built on Jesus. Our peace, our purpose, and our identity don’t shift with the weather because they are rooted in the Rock. And we know the enemy doesn’t get the final word. Scripture says when the thief is caught, he must return sevenfold (Proverbs 6:31). What the enemy meant for harm, God will turn for good, and we are standing firm, believing for restoration, recompense, and a greater comeback than we could ever imagine. Yes we might bend but we don’t break.

Life has a way of testing what you’re made of. When you’re built on sand which is things like approval, success, image, money, or even relationships know that those things can shift and collapse under pressure. But when your life is built on Jesus, you can bend without breaking. Storms may shake you, but they won’t shatter you.

It’s not your performance, popularity, or possessions that define your worth. It’s your position in Christ.

You may feel stretched. You may weep. You may even wonder if you’ll make it through. But if your identity is rooted in Jesus, then you are unshakable. You are not built on the applause of people, the opinions of others, or the highs and lows of circumstances. You are  built on the Word, the presence, and the promises of God.

Your identity is not in what you do but it is in who He is! Jesus is the rock!

If the enemy can confuse your identity, he can shake your foundation. That’s why it’s so important to remember who you are and Whose you are.

• You are loved not because of what you do, but because of who He is.

• You are chosen not because of perfection, but because of grace.

• You are secure not because life is easy, but because your Savior Jesus  is faithful.

So when the storm comes (and it will), your job is not to panic but to remember what you are built on. Your identity isn’t in your wins or losses. It isn’t in a title or reputation. It’s in the One who never changes, Jesus!

How to Storm-Proof Your Life

1. Daily Devotion to God’s Word. His Word anchors your soul when the world shakes around you.

2. Prayer and Praise. When your knees hit the ground, your spirit stands tall.

3. Community with Believers. You’re not meant to weather storms alone surround yourself with faith family.

4. Obedience to His Voice. Hearing and doing what He says is what separates the wise from the foolish.

The storm doesn’t define you. The foundation does.

If you’re in the middle of a storm right now, don’t despair. You were built for this. Esther 4:14 you are anointed for such a time as this. You are not built on sand, but on the rock that is Christ Jesus. He is your sure place. He holds you secure. The winds may blow, the waters may rise, but you will stand.

You may bend, but you won’t break.

Because your identity is in Jesus, you can face the storm with peace, hope, and unshakable confidence. He is your refuge, your builder, and your rock.

Stay rooted, stay faithful, and stay standing, because storms don’t last, but God’s Word does.

“The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever.” ‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭40‬:‭8‬ ‭NIV‬‬
